Product Description
Ionos features In-mold construction with a sleek, four-piece shell. In-mold construction fuses the helmet's outer shell with the impact-absorbing EPS liner. The two materials are fused together, and one is reinforced by the other. This exoskeleton' allows Ionos to be lighter, more durable and more ventilated than traditional road helmets.

Amazon.com Product Description
The Ionos is the most technologically advanced road cycling helmet Giro has ever created. The Ionos is built around a proprietary in-mold composite sub-frame (ICS) that provides the strength to support 21 of the largest vents ever carved into a bike helmet. These massive vents, coupled with an intricate network of internal channels, creates a cooling system dubbed Wind Tunnel ventilation, making Ionos the coolest, best-ventilated helmet on the market. The helmet is perfect for keeping Grand Tour champions like Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador cool on the hottest days and over the most tortuous Alpine climbs.

The helmet's Wind Tunnel ventilation thrusts cool, fresh air over and around the rider's head.
Ionos Technologies
The Ionos helmet employs some of the most advanced technologies that Giro has ever used in a bike helmet. The Ionos' in-mold construction, for example, fuses the helmet's outer shell with the impact-absorbing EPS liner. Not only does this reinforce both layers, but the "exoskeleton" also allows Giro to engineer helmets that are lighter, more durable, and better ventilated. This culminates in the helmet's proprietary Wind Tunnel ventilation system, which combines active vents with internal exhaust channels that thrust cool, fresh air over and around the rider's head while forcing heat and stale air out. By definition, a channel is a route through which anything passes or progresses. In the case of Giro helmets, the internal channels are carefully crafted and are one of the keys to a well-ventilated helmet. This significant increase in air channeling makes a difference that riders will feel immediately.

The secret behind the vent technology is the in-mold composite subframe, which lets Giro offer huge vents without compromising protection. The Ionos features a visible weave of carbon reinforcement that runs through the helmet's liner and around the vents. By using these advanced materials, the sub-frame can be tuned to provide incredible structural support, impact dispersion, and resistance to penetration.

Padding and Fit
The Ionos offers X-Static helmet padding, which is entwined with an environmentally friendly silver-coated fabric called Silver Fiber. Found exclusively in Ionos helmets, the fabric provides anti-microbial and thermodynamic benefits, so in addition to keeping you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, your helmet will stay fresh all year round. Finally, the Ionos helmet is engineered using Super Fit technology, making it so comfortable that it virtually disappears when you put it on. The proprietary three-size Super Fit system is based on "human scale factors" data and nearly 20 years of crafting helmets for the best riders in the world. The result is a helmet that fits 98 percent of the world's population, yet looks and feels like it was made just for you.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Giro Ionos Is An Excellent Helmet   July 31, 2009

This is an excellent helmet and it works too. I gave it a crash test last month when I was hit by a car (I was doing 25 mph) and hit my head hard on the asphalt. The helmet didn't break or crack and I didn't suffer any type of head injuries. I was so impressed, I replaced it with the same model. The fit is great and I wore it on a 200 mile one day ride without any discomfort. It isn't a cheap helmet, but what kind of price do you put on your life?

The Garmin color isn't bad either.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Design and Functionality   October 11, 2009

I purchased this helmet for summer road cycling. My mountain bike helmet just did not provide sufficient ventilation (or comfort). I read numerous reviews on cycling helmets and decided to purchase this one. I was very surprised at how comfortable this helmet is. I place the helmet on my head with the adjustment strap (two sliding tabs on either side along the back) fully open and then adjust the tension to provide a comfortable fit. This helmet covers more of the sides of your head and reduces the "mushroom head" appearance. The ear/chin adjustment straps are easy to manipulate and are of quality material. The interior pads, which attach to multiple areas of the helmet with Velcro, are more comfortable and of superior quality (stitched padding strips) than other helmets I have used. The kit contains a full replacement set of pads as do most others. The ventilation is superb- far exceeding my already high expectations. I did not find the increased ventilation bothersome in any way as several other reviewers have observed (even at 35 mph). I have very short hair and have found that a absorbent skull cap (Under Armour Mesh Skull Cap) worn under the helmet is VERY effective in controlling sweat (no fogged sun glasses for 2+ hour rides). The only minor issue I have come across is that the highly aerodynamic design results in surfaces which make attaching a rear view mirror marginally more difficult. My local bike shop (Wamsley's Cycles, Morgantown WV) was able to find a mirror that could be securely attached to the helmet after some flexing of the base plate. The helmet is expensive ($160 USD via Amazon back in July) but I feel it is worth the expense- this thing is extremely comfortable, high quality build and will last as long as I am accident free...

Update (8-21-10): Fell while road riding and hit my head onto the road at about 18 mph. Helmet absorbed the entire impact and has impact damage. This possibly saved my life today. Will be purchasing a replacement unit.

5 out of 5 stars The best I have ever worn.   January 19, 2009

Never skip on the head gear! If you can afford this one, then go for it. It is the most comfortable helmet I have ever worn. I keep my hair in a ponytail while riding so that is not a problem. The air vents on this helmet are fantastic, it looks good, and it gives me a more safe feeling while wearing it. This helmet is so light that you hardly know you are wearing it. I will replace it immediately with another if something should happen to this one.

I never wore a helmet before. I thought they would be to confining. Not this helmet. It's so light you don't even know it's there. The vents are aligned perfectly. I actually think wearing it makes it cooler then not wearing one.
I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Pricey, but worth it if you have the $$$   July 28, 2009

I'll start this off by saying that this is a pricey helmet. If you shop around, you can pick it up though for around $150. I got into road cycling after mountain biking for a few months, and found that my mountain bike helmet just didn't cut it in terms of airflow. Mountain biking generally has a lot more shade, and you aren't traveling at nearly the same speeds as road cycling most of the time, so airflow is not as great a benefit as it is on the road.

I shopped around, almost picked up the Atmos, but decided to splurge and pick up the top of the line. I couldn't be happier with this helmet, and I noticed immediately the difference in the temperature of my head while riding in 90-100+ degree temps during the summer here in Texas. The adjustable fit is excellent and I barely notice the helmet on my head most of the time. I still sweat a lot, but I can at least feel the airflow over my noggin while cruising at 20+ mph, and it is a relief. If you've got the $$$ and want the best, look no further.
